A gift of Mozart from the Albany Symphony

ALBANY — It’s not just with contemporary music that David Alan Miller has big ambitions for the Albany Symphony Orchestra. This weekend’s concerts at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall were dedicated to a vast array of works that Mozart wrote during 1786, a typically productive year.

For the Concerto No. 24 in C Minor, K. 491, the soloist was Wei Luo. There was a greater weight and force to her touch, which was welcome. In the opening she captured the dark fire of the orchestral writing. Her cadenzas, written by the contemporary composer Paul Badura-Skoda, titled toward the romantic, just as the concerto itself foreshadows that emerging style. In the Larghetto, a series of extended trills were almost bled dry. That was followed by a rather cosmic interplay between piano and strings.
